How To Make Your Own Canvas Bird Art

I've received many wonderful comments on my canvas bird art from a previous post. A recent reader inspired me to provide a simple tutorial, and a few templates on how to create your own canvas bird art. It's super simple and so much fun!

the supplies...

an assortment of favorite papers, wrapping papers, ribbons, buttons
acrylic craft paints
art canvas in a variety of sizes
mod podge, craft glue
hot glue gun

the how-to...

  1. paint or cover your canvas in paper

to adhere the paper wrap, you may have to use a hot glue gun, or even glue dots. some canvas material is a little finicky. i wrapped my paper all the way around to the back and adhered it to the wooden frame inside the canvas's back
i used a combination of painted and paper-covered canvases
experiment with a couple techniques, and remember, they don' t have to be perfect!
try painting some polka dots, or stripes!

  2. allow time for the canvases to fully dry. in the meantime, prepare your templates, and cut out your artwork

i encourage you to mix and match as many paper textures, patterns and colors so your art makes a bold impact

  3. take time to piece together your artwork on the canvas first, before gluing

  4. gently coat the back of paper piece with mod podge and adhere to canvas, work piece by piece until your artwork is glued and compiled on the canvas

  5. feel free to mod podge the entire canvas with a thin coat

    i didn't on mine...

  6. embellish your canvases with a variety of ribbons, ric rac, or buttons
adhere your embellishments to the canvas using hot glue

  7. And voila! Your artwork is complete!

the templates...

I've provided a variety of templates below inspired by a few of my designs.

Cuddly.

I'm excited and nervous to finally let everyone know that I've been working on a new project with my Canadian best friend, Julie! When we were pregnant, and even more so now, we've been amazed at how many cool baby products are out there. We've spent hours upon hours brainstorming ideas, and searching for baby stuff (that's predominantely hard to find in Canada). And, after all that, we came up with the concept for True Cuddles.

True Cuddles is a website for moms and anyone searching for hip and unique baby gear - but with a fun shopping twist. Each week we'll feature one baby product at a sizeably discounted price - our cuddle of the week - but only until they're sold out. The following week, we'll feature a new product, and so on...

True Cuddles is a fun and unique shopping experience but we haven't stopped there-we've created a community for you to discover and reach out to other moms. We'll be featuring product testing, mompreneurs, and other mommy tips! Learn more...

Our website is almost done and we'll be launching around November 1! It's password protected for now....so you can't actually see it until it goes live...but you can check out the blog that we started at : http://www.truecuddles.com/

Right now we're eagerly trying to get the word out, so if you know of any moms or mommies-to-be please pass this info along to them. :)
Anyone can sign up now, so please go check out the blog and sign up and you'll be emailed when the very FIRST cuddle of the week is posted!

Butterflies and Berries

I love hosting parties... most of all I love decorating for parties! Here are some quick, simple, and inexpensive ideas for party decor for your upcoming celebration from my daughter's 1st birthday party! The inspiration was a paper stack I found at a local craft store.

1. My mom and I handcut 100 butterfies this summer from the inspirational paper stack. The colors are so bright and cheerful. We used butterfly silhoettes as the template, and designed varied sizes. After gently folding a crease in the butterfly's belly, I used blue painter's tape to attach the butterflies to the wall - having them trail along from our entrance to the back patio. Something so simple and small goes a long way! I plan to transfer the butterflies to my daughter's playroom walls! (I'd love to take credit for this idea... but I did find the original online. )

2. This polka-dot garland was inspired by one of Martha Stewart's products. I used a circle diecut I had in my craft room to punch several polka dots. I sandwiched inexpensive ribbon inbetween the polka dots and glued them together using craft glue. These would be super cute hanging vertically from the ceiling as well in different lengths - finishing them off with colorful ribbons at the ends.

3. Use cake plates you have around the house, cut circles of paper to line them, and stack them to display your tasty desserts!
